Brighton Pavilion & Dome

This contract was for the refurbishment of the existing listed buildings and dome associated with the Brighton Pavilion, Museum and Theatre. The scaffolding structures required a great deal of input from both the main contractor, Skanska UK Building and Anglewest Ltd, due to the complexity of the project. Access was extremely restricted on site, therefore the beam sections for the roof and the hanging access scaffold to the dome had to be constructed in the adjacent roadway.
Completed sections were craned into position at night. This proved to be very successful and caused very little disturbance to the local residents. A close working relationship was developed on this contract, which lead to a smooth and timely completion. See more photos here

The Howard Hotel, London

Chorus Group contracted Anglewest Ltd to carry out the scaffolding works for the Howard Hotel, which consisted of constructing three additional floors on top of the existing Hotel. Only partial shutdown of the existing rooms was allowed and with the building structure near its loading limit scaffolding and a temporary roof were still required. The scaffold had to be designed to accommodate the access and temporary roof from 6th floor up without impinging on the lower floors.

This was overcome by erecting steel beams throughout the length of the building on the floor sitting upon each of the supporting cross walls. Once the steel was in place a mattress of ‘Mitie Diamond Beams' was erected across and fixed to the steel from the front to the rear elevation, which cantilevered out so as to support the main external independent scaffold. The scaffold then had a ‘Boulton system temporary roof' erected off the independent scaffold. The temporary roof had removable sheets as well as a dedicated crane slot, which enabled materials access into the cocoon. This proved to be a very successful structure preventing water penetration as well as screening the works to the outside world.

The Swiss Re Building (The Gherkin)

Anglewest Ltd were contracted by Kontor GTCM to carry out the scaffolding for the Fit Out on this most modern construction. This predominantly consisted of birdcages erected in the spiralling atria rising up the building and in itself was not too complicated as it repeated floor-by-floor. However the potential problems with the logistics in delivering the components to each floor for erection and finally clearing once the hoists, cranes etc had been totally removed. It was an immense challenge.

With careful planning, early morning and late evening deliveries, plus multiple handling of materials and a great deal of co-operation from both parties, this led to a successful completion.

The Ark, Hammersmith Flyover

Everybody using the M4 into London knows the Ark. The scaffold for this project from the outside looked to be minimal - a few independent scaffolds to the brick columns, handrails and balcony scaffolds etc - but it was the inside where all the complications were encountered. A birdcage was designed and erected in the Atrium, a structure that had to be seen to be believed. Approximately 30% of the birdcage was founded upon the ground floor slab, rising floor by floor up the building and accommodating a separate café pod structure.
The remaining 70% stepped onto floors and continued up, some stopping further up the building and some continuing to the top platform level. Each floor slab footprint changed as the building rose up to the roof level, which created overhangs and step-ins; a designer and supervisor's nightmare. The scaffold took some 15-20 weeks to erect although sections were worked upon from almost day one. The main Contractor, Ake Larson Ltd congratulated Anglewest Ltd for the professional manner in which the works were carried out to a successful completion.

Kew Palace, Kew Gardens

The Main contractor had to refurbish the palace building, which consisted of stripping the roof, replacing spalled bricks with dowelled veneers, renewing windows and decoration. The programme available was very tight and the only option was a temporary roof.

The scaffold consisted of an access scaffold and temporary roof to provide a watertight envelope with working platforms to the perimeter of the structure.

The scaffold could not be tied into the fabric of the building in any way, shape or form, so an alternative method using a series of buttress towers and kent ledge was adopted. The works were completed successfully without water penetration or any movement regardless of the absence of the ties.

50 Triton Square, London

This was a commercial development by Kvaerner Construction Ltd (Skanska UK Building). The project was to build office facilities with a dealer floor. The contractor utilised many standard scaffolds as well as some specialised designed structures. The largest and most impressive scaffold was the support/birdcage access/temporary cover to the atrium roof. The scaffold consisted of a series of trishores and structural steelwork erected from the ground floor slab, these being linked together with unit beams bridging the floor area below to give a clear working area.
Once the bridging was complete a birdcage structure was erected using Cuplok system scaffold. At the roof level the Cuplok scaffold was bridged again using unit beams in both directions and extended to the perimeter of the circular atrium. At this level a double-boarded deck with a sealed membrane was erected on a slight fall to the centre of the area to a gully outlet for water removal via down pipes attached to the birdcage. The boards were then covered in sheets of plywood to give a complete working deck. The scaffold continued through the deck to the underside of the Atrium steelwork, where a series of U Heads were erected to give support to the steel until the installation of the roof glass was complete.

This scaffold was a total success as it gave clear working access below, supported the roof steel and prevented water penetration into the building. See more photos here

Moor House, Moorgate, London

This Skanska UK Building project is a Norman Foster designed building providing prestigious office space and is situated on the corner of Moorgate and London Wall. This challenging contract also included the construction of an airshaft for the Cross Rail Link tunnel.

Anglewest Ltd constructed gantries, hanging scaffolds ‘CombiSafe' protection and many more standard scaffolds on this contract and enjoyed a good working relationship with the site team.

Hatch Warren School, Basingstoke

Anglewest Ltd were contracted by Wates Construction Ltd to carry out the scaffolding works to this project. The works consisted of building an ‘S' shaped extension, re-roofing part of the existing building together with internal refurbishment. Anglewest Ltd worked closely with the Contractor's team to develop a scheme for a temporary roof scaffold in conjunction with internal roof support/access platforms as well as the standard access scaffolds required for this type of project.

The temporary roof used was the ‘Boulton Construction Products' roofing system which consisted of two free standing Cuplok independent scaffolds with buttress towers (to avoid tying) which spanned 26m with the lightweight pitched roof. The benefits of this roof system are: it is quick to assemble, lightweight and crane access can be gained via pre-selected bays by easy removal of the roof sheets. See more photos here
